how much would a geisha costume cost?
i was going to attempt to make one, but though it may be hard to find suitable materials, and may be better in the long run to just buy a costume.

does anyone know what price range/where to buy one ?

An authentic one or a satin-bathrobe fake one?

Authentic maiko and geiko costumes can costs tens of thousands of dollars brand-new. You can usually fake the look with regular kimono (e.g. using kurotomesode or irodomesode for geisha and furisode for maiko), some self-made accessories, a katsura, and nice kanzashi, but even that can be very expensive (to the tune of several hundred dollars, or even well over $1000)…especially if you put a lot of effort into finding and making authentic-looking pieces, or spend the money to buy a real hikizuri or susohiki instead of just looking for a really long tomesode or furisode. Generally speaking, it’s easier and cheaper to face the geisha look than the maiko look.

You can buy kimono from Ichiroya, Yamatoku, Kimono Lily, and Ryu Japan, if you want them second-hand, or from Bokunan-do, jshoppers.com, and the international section of Rakuten if you want them brand-new. You can find kanzahi on eBay, and sometimes on Etsy or Flickr you can find people who know how to make authentic maiko styles and will do commissions. You can usually find used katsura on eBay as well. If you don’t mind going through a shopping service, Yahoo Japan Auctions is also a good place to look.
