Brett Favre and Vikings vs 49ers: ESPN Sunday Night Football

The annual “will he or won’t he play” is now officially over as Brett Favre will suit up in the purple and gold for the Minnesota Vikings when they face the San Francisco 49ers for Sunday night football on ESPN. Online sportsbooks have the 49ers -3 favorites in NFL preseason betting for week 2 vs the Vikings while the over/under total is listed at 35. Bookmakers also favor the 49ers -145 vs the Vikings +125 in NFL odds for preseason money lines. As the private plane landed at Flying Cloud Airport in Minnesota on August 16th; the TV cameras followed Favre’s every move in a black SUV on his way to Vikings training camp, reminiscent of a certain USC Trojan. Now a week later in Favre’s return, the old gun slinger from Mississippi will enter his 20th season at quarterback and will start vs San Francisco for Sunday Night football on ESPN.

Did Favre know all along and just want to miss the dreaded two-a-days at camp or was he seriously considering retiring if doctors handed him a negative prognosis on his knee? These questions might never be known but heading into the Vikings 2010 NFL schedule one thing is for certain… Favre will be in the money. NFL sources say that in his presumably last season, the 40-year-old could make up to nearly $28 million in salary, signing bonuses and incentives. The timing seems to be perfect as Favre was not really needed in the 28-7 handling of the St. Louis Rams last week as 1.5 underdogs and still has nearly three more weeks to get his timing down before the regular season starts.

The 49ers are also heading into week 2 NFL betting odds with a win as they defeated the Indianapolis Colts 37-17 as 3-pont favorites on the road while the over/under betting total flew OVER the 34.5 posted at online sportsbooks. To be fair, six of the Colts normal starters did not play and Peyton Manning only played a quick two series and drove Indianapolis down the field for a touchdown and field goal. Once Manning came out of the game, the Colts committed four turnovers and San Francisco capitalized with 34 straight points to show why they are one of the favorites at online sportsbooks to win the 2010 AFC conference.
